Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures is teaming up with acclaimed directors Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham on a series of DVDs featuring a collection of music videos, shorts and commercials hand-picked by the film-makers, along with storyboards, alternate versions and unseen short films. Releases from the three directors will be out in August, with more directors set to join the series. Jonze, whose work features the Oscar-nominated pictures Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, initially established himself as a music video director and has worked with Fat Boy Slim, Bjork and The Beastie Boys, among others. French-born Gondry’s music video career has seen him work with Radiohead and The Rolling Stones, while Cunningham has collaborated with Portishead and Aphex Twin.
“Michel [Gondry] and I have been talking about this forever,” Jonze said in a statement. “A couple of years ago we talked to Chris, which got us motivated. I’m so excited we’re finally getting it together.” Palm founder Blackwell added in a statement: “I have long admired the work of Spike, Chris and Michel and feel this DVD series is the perfect way to release all of the best work from a new generation of talented and influential film-makers.” The DVDs will be released in the US through Palm’s domestic distribution deal with WEA. The series will be released throughout the rest of the world in early 2004.
