Yesterday was pretty much the most exciting day in the world because when I got home there was a brand new copy of Dogs In Space waiting for me in my mailbox.

I have been needing this movie on DVD my whole life. I often joke (but am being completely honest) and say Dogs in Space is the only reason why I still own a VCR. For some silly reason, it has never seen a proper DVD release, just crappy bootleg versions on eBay that are even worse than the VHS. But Australia finally wised up and gave us this special 2-disc release chock full of commentaries and extras.

I watched the movie last night, for the first time ever in widescreen. It had me giggling and humming throughout. This movie is where I developed my crush on Michael Hutchence. His character, Sam, is just about the most precious thing I have ever seen.

It still nags at me that I have never come across a reasonable copy of the CD soundtrack. A hunt online still results in $200 price tags, which is just too ridiculous, even for me. I did make Jared a hodge-podge mp3 soundtrack once, which worked well enough.

One day I’ll get it… But for now, I am completely thrilled to own my new DVD.

Ever since Mal Vincent’s “The Best Movies of the Decade” article came out, I can not seem to stop referencing it. It’s pretty much the most laughable/infuriating thing I have ever read.

My favorite part is when he lists the “Most overrated:”

  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • Amelie
  • City of God
  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
  • Lost in Translation

And let’s not forget his inclusion of Chicken Run in the list of “Best of the Decade,”

There would be no peace at home if “Chicken Run” didn’t make the list, because it is the all-time favorite of one of my resident Scottish terriers, Duncan.

And this is our local movie reviewer; the guy that can (unfortunately) make or break a movie at the Naro.

Ever since I read Justin’s review of [Rec], I’ve been waiting for it to come off the new release shelf at Naro Video (because I’m being cheap). But I caved in last night and went ahead and paid for it. I couldn’t wait any longer. And it was totally worth the $2.

I was completely mesmerized the entire film and sat up straight in front of the screen swallowing every second of it. I have got to buy this one ASAP and force people to come over and watch it.

There is, of course, an American remake called Quarantine, but why would you bother with that when you can watch the real thing and be 100% satisfied after viewing?

Until the Light Takes Us is coming to the Naro January 15th & 16th. Our description reads:

This feature documentary unearths the real story of black metal, a movement and music genre led by metal musicians, murderers, church burners, and suicide victims. The film examines the birth and explosive arc of black metal from the perspective of the musicians, young men who tried to change the world using music and symbolic acts of violence. Featured groups include Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, Ulver, Thorns, Boards of Canada, Black Dice, Sunn 0))), Múm, and J Lesser.

Naturally, I am intrigued by this. But mostly I am curious as to what múm and Boards of Canada have to do with it.

IMDB’s description reads:

Until The Light Takes Us is a feature length documentary chronicling the history, ideology and aesthetic of Norwegian black metal – a musical subculture infamous as much for a series of murders and church arsons as it is for its unique musical and visual aesthetics and extreme ideologies. This is the first film to shed light on a movement that has been shrouded in darkness and rumor and further obscured by inaccurate and shallow depictions. Featuring exclusive interviews and verité with the musicians, a wealth of rare, seldom seen footage from the “Black Circle”s earliest days, Until the Light Takes Us is an intimate exploration of the controversial movement that has captured the attention of the world. The filmmakers spent a couple years in Norway getting to know the key players in the scene, and this is their story.

Guys, I really want to see this.

October 28th, 2009

Since the boring-ass Naro probably won’t show this (or may show it in January-ish), I’m happy to learn that it starts today on Video On Demand. Now to find a TV and cable and see if it’s showing here…

9

Went to see 9 last night. I thought the story was pretty bland and typical, but the film itself was beautiful and I loved the characters. I should like to get the DVD when it comes out and turn the sound off and make my own soundtrack instead. Since both Fever Ray and The Glitch Mob were used in the trailer and TV spot, I think those two are a good place to start.

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within

District 9 was pretty much perfect, and I absolutely loved it. I am not usually a fan of CGI movies, my eyes can’t get past the obvious differences, but this one felt very natural to me. Kudos to the filmmakers for that.

It does an extraordinary job of illustrating how idiotic male-driven societies are, and what complete power-hungry fools they can be. It’s all kill or conquer. There isn’t a strong female character seen anywhere in the film, and in a normal Hollywood blockbuster setting this would piss me off, but I think it worked out well here. I don’t know if any of this was intentional, I’m sure it’s just me being boys-are-dumb bitchy, but it really made me fall for the film.

One of the best experiences of the movie was when it ended and the guy behind me said, “At first I didn’t know who to root for. But then I saw the slums they lived in. Just exterminate them all. Get rid of them.”

Perfect. Thank you for validating it all for me.

*Side note: They played the trailer for Jennifer’s Body. I know this is a Diablo Cody movie, and I keep reading such good things about it, but that trailer is awful. I will still watch it when it comes to either Naro or DVD, but I am in no rush. There have been times where a trailer is just really bad, and does a horrible job of selling the film. I hope this is one of them.

Jared’s little brother just gave him a copy of the colorized version of Forbidden Zone (aka the movie we love so much we flew to CA to view the theatrical re-release). I had no idea about this release, but rest assured, i have since ordered myself a copy.

I’ve been telling Amanda for the past year that she must come over and watch it with me, or maybe even show it for Outdoor Movie Party one night, but it hasn’t happened yet. I think getting this new version of it might a sign that it is now the time.

This is a great week for DVDs. It’s almost like I’m in the condo again getting daily package deliveries. Ahhh, the good old days. Soon. Very soon.
